CNN —Spanning decades of Russian history from the confines of a luxury hotel, “A Gentleman in Moscow” provides another strong TV showcase for Ewan McGregor, this time playing opposite his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. At the same time, the show manages to be quite funny and even romantic, nicely developing the other lives that Alexander touches. Plus, there’s the added kick of seeing McGregor and Winstead (who met shooting the third season of FX’s “Fargo”) sink their teeth into such juicy, flamboyant roles. And while Alexander might not be able to leave, viewers who voluntarily check into the Hotel Metropol will have plenty of reasons to enjoy their stay. “A Gentleman in Moscow” premieres March 29 on Paramount+ with Showtime and March 31 at 9 p.m.

CNN —In the early heyday of miniseries, “Shōgun” was the show of the year in 1980, and it might be again 44 years later. That chaos also creates the possibility of one regent emerging to consolidate power, and perhaps even gain the title of shōgun. Of course, in today’s heavily fragmented streaming environment “Shōgun” won’t be the massive ratings hit that it was back when there were three broadcast networks (and not much else), but those who wade into this dense history will be amply rewarded. “All men can be broken,” Toranaga muses at one point, with a quiet sense of menace and determination. If only all limited series could be half as good as “Shōgun.”“Shōgun” premieres February 27 on Hulu and at 10 p..m. ET the same day on FX.

The women had suffered lithium poisoning while working at battery factories and began to break into fits of destructive rage during their shifts. In Lin’s retelling, the workers are resurrected as demons, seething with chaotic desire. The restaurant kitchen in FX’s series “The Bear,” which premiered in 2022, is a ticking time bomb of screaming, stove fires and oil burns. (“The Bear,” for all its frenetic pacing, dips into full-blown surrealism only during interludes showing lead chef Carm’s dreams.) These stories portray workers who are not simply anxious and exhausted but violently combusting.

It’s official: Peak TV has peaked. Last year, 516 scripted television series aired or streamed in the United States, a 14 percent decline from 2022, the FX cable network said on Friday. That was only the second drop in at least 15 years, and the biggest, according to FX’s research. The total is the most definitive evidence of a slowdown that executives have been predicting for at least a year. The strikes wiped out the entire fall lineup for scripted network TV, and the fallout is likely to be felt throughout 2024.

The show focuses on the schism between the novelist Truman Capote, played by Tom Hollander, and the coterie of New York City socialites he befriended. Some of the society fixtures, whom Capote referred to as his “swans,” are played by a distinguished cast: Barbara “Babe” Paley (Naomi Watts), Nancy “Slim” Keith (Diane Lane), C. Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart), Joanne Carson (Molly Ringwald) and Ann Woodward (Demi Moore). The series is based on “Capote’s Women,” a 2021 book by Laurence Leamer. The Times’s Charlotte Curtis reported that “international Who’s Who of notables” attended including Frank Sinatra, Mia Farrow and the Maharani of Jaipur.

“Succession,” “The Bear” and “Beef” dominated the 75th Emmy Awards on Monday night, winning top awards during a show that seemed like a throwback to another era, when TikTok didn’t exist and people still tuned in for appointment TV. FX’s “The Bear,” about a Chicago restaurant, won a total of 10 awards—the most of any show—including best comedy. Stars Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach picked up acting Emmys. “Succession,” about a media mogul and his family, won best drama for its final season, while Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook won acting accolades. “Beef,” a Netflix dark comedy, won best limited series and acting awards for Ali Wong and Steven Yeun.

It’s the latest hot TV genre: a woman in a frigid outpost, bundled in puffy outerwear, trying to uncover truths buried in ice. And now I find myself in puffy outerwear, trudging through snow in glacial Iowa, trying to uncover truths buried in the ice. I don’t have as much of a mystery to unravel as the TV detectives. The only thing the horde of reporters here is trying to figure out is if Donald Trump will win the caucuses on Monday with a plurality or if he can pull off a majority. No one is expecting a Jimmy Carter/Barack Obama-style upset.

An eccentric tech billionaire invites a slew of notables to a private retreat, where a detective must solve a mysterious death. The murder mystery, in comparison, is among the most literal, plot-reliant of genres. Could Marling and Batmanglij really have made something that … ordinary? FX’s “Murder,” which begins Tuesday on Hulu, is neither as weird as you might hope or as conventional as you might fear. Think of it as “Glass OAnion.”The detective here is a relative newcomer.

Every now and then, a fictional character can have a profound real-world impact. In 2023, a very different character is revealing different truths, and the effect is, if anything, even richer and more meaningful. The character is Richie Jerimovich, brilliantly portrayed by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and the show in which he appears is FX’s “The Bear,” the second season of which was released last month. Episode by episode, Richie opens a window into the souls of so very many of our friends and neighbors. He forces us to answer an uncomfortable question: How do we respond to people in pain?

Opinion | What ‘The Bear’ Revealed About My Grief

The pilot episode of “The Bear,” FX’s frenetic series about a high-end chef who takes over his family’s blue-collar sandwich shop, opens with an unsettling image. The man swings the door open wide and confronts a great, angry bear. At first, he tries to soothe the beast, whispering, “I know.” But the bear lunges at him. The bear is grief. The kind of trauma that grief imposes has become a popular subject on buzzy TV shows.

CNN —For those wondering who would build a giant holiday musical-comedy around Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, the “produced by Will Ferrell” credit provides a helpful clue. “Spirited” tries turning “A Christmas Carol” on its head, and while it’s big and boisterous, the movie (hitting theaters before Apple TV+) isn’t consistently irreverent enough to feel like much more than a streaming stocking stuffer. Of course, playing with Charles Dickens’ oft-told tale brings a lot of shorthand to the proceedings, with Ferrell as the Ghost of Christmas Present, who stumbles upon Reynolds’ fast-talking Clint Briggs, a media consultant introduced trying to commoditize Christmas. Present identifies him as a candidate to become their next “perp,” offered a Scrooge-like shot at redemption. “Spirited” premieres November 11 in select US theaters and November 18 on Apple TV+.
Kit Connor's sexuality is none of your business

CNN —The pressure for 18-year-old actor Kit Connor to come out had been building on social media for months. It is one of the first to center LGBTQ characters — both Nick and Charlie, as well as others in the main cast — geared towards a teen and young adult audience. Rob Youngson/NetflixThe truth about Nelson’s character, as well as Connor’s real-life identity, may be much more nuanced. (From left) The cast of "Heartstopper" — Kizzy Edgell, Corinna Brown, Kit Connor, Joe Locke, Tobie Donovan and Sebastian Croft — attend London Pride on July 2. And artists like Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion have incorporated Southern Black aesthetics into their fashion and music videos. “We’re now seeing some of the vividness and vibrancy that has always been a part of the South,” Durham said. But in these shows, the South and its characters refuse the bumpkin stereotypes and embrace all the aspects of the South. “There are whole ways in which we are having to reimagine Blackness in the South,” Durham said. “We’re actually invited to see what the experiences are of the people who produce the culture,” Durham said.
